Music and Events

Music is an integral part of the Take Five atmosphere. You might have guessed that as we're named after a song and our walls feature images of jazz greats. We program our own music (and gladly pay our ASCAP fees to support the music makers). It's primarily jazz - lots of old Blue Note recordings - but we mix in a healthy dose of good rock, funk, soul and rhythm & blues. If there's something you think we might like to add, tell us. Our ears are always open.

Take Five Coffee Bar also features live music every Friday and Saturday night (and sometimes Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday too) from the amazingly talented artists living in the Kansas City area and beyond. Check our calendar and sign up for our e-mail newsletter to find out who's playing.  Enjoy a latte or a cocktail while you're listening, we won't object.

Saturday, July 5 - 8pm to 10pm:  Interstring ($10 cover)

We are so fortunate to once again host Interstring, a quartet unlike any other.  Consisting of Todd Strait (drums), Rod Fleeman and Danny Embrey (guitar) and Bob Bowman (bass) these old friends let you in on their conversation, and it's a great one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday, July 11 - 8pm to 10pm:  Mike Herrera Trio ($5 cover)
Featuring Mike (sax), Karl McComas-Reichl (bass) and Matt Leifer (drums) this is not only a performance but a birthday bash for the band leader!  Come help Mike celebrate.  There might be cake.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Saturday, July 12 - 8pm to 10pm:  Horacescope ($5 cover)

Stan Kessler presents the music of the late Horace Silver, a phenomenal pianist and composer.  This group, consisting of Stan (trumpet), Paul Smith (keys), Dave Chael (sax), Ben Leifer (bass) and Sam Wisman (drums), has been performing his music together for a long time, and this show will be even more special with Horace's passing on June 18 this year.  A great tribute to a great jazz man.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday, July 18 - 8pm to 10pm:  Mambo de Leon and Carte Blanc ($5 cover)
We are so excited to have Miguel "Mambo" de Leon back at Take Five.  If your summer isn't hot enough yet, this show will do it.  Hot Latin music from one of the best in the business, come get YOUR Mambo on with birthday boy Miguel!
Saturday, July 19 - 8pm to 10pm:  Westport Art Ensemble ($10 cover)
We are so fortunate to host this outstanding group in our living room.  Featuring drummer Todd Strait, bassist Gerald Spaits, pianist Roger Wilder and Dave Chael on sax.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Friday, July 25 - 8pm to 10pm:  Final Fridays with the Peter Schlamb Quartet ($5 cover)

Our favorite quartet took June off for out of state gigs, and we definitely missed them!  Back for the Final Fridays series, we present Peter Schlamb (vibes), Hermon Mehari (trumpet), Karl McComas-Reichl (bass) and John Kizilarmut (drums) hitting all the right notes, all the time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday, July 26 - 8pm to 10pm:  Gerald Spaits Quartet ($5 cover)
Bassist Gerald Spaits along with Charles Perkins (woodwinds), Arny Young (drums) and Jack Lightfoot (trumpet) always puts on a masterful and immensely entertaining show.  We think any time these guys are in the same room, you should be there.  Seriously.
