Music and Events

Music is an integral part of the Take Five atmosphere. You might have guessed that as we're named after a song and our walls feature images of jazz greats. We program our own music (and gladly pay our ASCAP fees to support the music makers). It's primarily jazz - lots of old Blue Note recordings - but we mix in a healthy dose of good rock, funk, soul and rhythm & blues. If there's something you think we might like to add, tell us. Our ears are always open.

Take Five Coffee Bar also features live music every Friday and Saturday night (and sometimes Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday too) from the amazingly talented artists living in the Kansas City area and beyond. Check our calendar and sign up for our e-mail newsletter to find out who's playing.  Enjoy a latte or a cocktail while you're listening, we won't object.

Friday, September 5 - 8pm to 10pm:  Project H CD RELEASE PARTY ($5 cover)

We are thrilled to host this CD Release Party for Project H!  Recent winners of The Pitch Music Award, their latest release, "We Live Among The Lines", is so good that you'll probably want two copies.  The band consists of Ryan Heinlein (trombone), Clint Ashlock (trumpet), Matt Leifer (drums), Brett Jackson (sax), Jeff Stocks (guitar), Andrew Ouellette (keys) and Dominique Sanders (bass) and they play all original compositions which will leave you singing along well after they're done for the night.

Saturday, September 6 - 8pm to 10pm:  BOWDOG feat. Bob Bowman ($5 cover)

Bassist Bob Bowman is the stuff of legend.  If you didn't happen to see a copy of the last Jazz Ambassadors Magazine you may want to pick one up and read the cover story (we have copies here).  Tonight he's joined by Brad Gregory (sax), John Kizilarmut (drums) and in his very last appearance before he moves to New York - Wayne Hawkins on keys. Friday, September 12 - 8pm to 10pm:  Hard@Play ($5 cover)

In what might be their swan song at Take Five (we aren't technically allowed to host anything but jazz at the new joint), the guys of Hard@Play are sure to pack the house with their signature sound - horn driven rock from the 60s and 70s.  Think Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears; think you better get here way early to get a seat, too.

Saturday, September 13 - 8pm to 10pm:  Shay Estes & Friends ($5 cover)

The remarkable Shay Estes joins us for an evening (it's been way too long).  Tonight she brings equally remarkable musicians with her - Mark Lowrey (keys) and John Kizilarmut (drums).

Friday, September 19 - 8pm to 10pm:  JIG ($5 cover)

The James Isaac Group (JIG) is comprised of some of the best and most creative guys in the city, and are sure to blow your socks off.  Leader James Isaac (sax) brings Jeff Harshbarger (bass), Scotty McBee (drums) and Mike Stover (guitar) - come see where they take you.

Saturday, September 20 - 8pm to 10pm:  Matt Carrillo Group ($5 cover)

Every time Matt is in the house something special happens.  A KC native currently living in New York, Matt brings his best every time.  This time he's also bringing Mark Lowrey (keys), Brad Williams (drums), Matt Hopper (guitar) and Eboni Fondren (vocals) for a truly special evening.

Sunday, September 21 - 7pm to 9pm:  Sons of Brasil ($5 cover)

It's Lori's birthday, and we're celebrating in style!  Join us and the Sons of Brasil with Stan Kessler (trumpet), Doug Auwarter (drums), Danny Embrey (guitar) and special guest Forest Stewart (bass) for a special Sunday evening show.  There might be cake.

And to send our little corner coffee shop/jazz club off in style, we offer you four nights of stellar music...

Thursday, September 25 -7pm to 9pm:  Peter Schlamb Quartet ($5 cover)

Join Peter (vibes), Hermon Mehari (trumpet), John Kizilarmut (drums) and Karl McComas-Reichl (bass), one of the best young quartets not just in KC, but (in our humble opinion) in the nation right now.  Pick up a copy of their new CD "Tinks" while you're here.

Friday, September 26 - 8pm to 10pm:  Bob Bowman with Todd Strait & Roger Wilder ($10 cover)

KC legend Bob Bowman (bass) is paired with KC native Todd Strait (drums) and pianist extraordinaire Roger Wilder; a conversation you don't want to miss.

Saturday, September 27 - 8pm to 10pm:  Grisha Alexiev & Diana Herold ($10 cover)

We've hosted Grisha and Diana the last two years and they are two of the most wonderful, down to earth, ridiculously talented people you'll meet, anywhere.  Joining us from New York, Grisha (drums) has played with Sam Rivers, Randy Brecker, John Cage just to name a few; Diana (vibes) with Yo Yo Ma, They Might Be Giants, Wynton Marsalis...  this couple is seriously talented.  Joined by Ron Carlson (guitar) and Greg Clinkingbeard (bass) we are thrilled to have them one last time in our small space.

Sunday, September 28 - 7pm to 9pm:  Diverse/Closing Celebration ($5 cover)

It's only fitting that Diverse is the last band to play at the current location, as they were the first band to play jazz on our "stage" four years ago (see photo above from that event).  Join Hermon Mehari (trumpet), Ben Leifer (bass) and Ryan Lee (drums) as they send us on to our new digs in style.  Pick up a copy of their latest CD "Our Journey" while you're here.

We'll be closed for a couple of weeks at the beginning of October.  Watch here for more information about what we have planned for the new location - the Opening Party is going to be an event you won't want to miss.

Thank you to everyone who made jazz in the corner of a smallish coffee shop in south Leawood possible; to the musicians who took a chance on us; to the customers and fans who come, sit down and listen; to our staff, who make this a great place to hang out; and last but not least, to our friends and family, for bearing with us, supporting us, and generally being our biggest cheerleaders.

We can't wait to show you ALL what's happening next...
